Sitting across from my darling

Stretching my arms over that solid, smooth cedar table

To hold her hand in mine

Alone we talked underneath that 7:00 o’clock living room light

We spoke of places we’ve been and places we dream of being

What of Greece?

Whitewashed walls leaning into a blue so flat it looks painted

I picture her there

Smiling as her eyes meet mine

Under the shade of a phoenix theophrasti tree

Barefoot on stone still warm from noon

And what of Barbados?

That piggy bank with a picture of a bungalow on the water

It sits on our nightstand

White moon after white moon

Feasting

And overweight

We swore never to break it until all expenses were paid

And what of America?

Seeking restaurants

Seeking dark bars, the kind with a jukebox and no windows

Day drinking

Losing the afternoon somewhere between the second round and the fourth

My sleeves

Rolled up

As we discussed our plans

And what of our seating arrangement

My darling accepts these arms

Hands joined

Like the shuffling of cards
